ARK Seminar Series 2010/11

ARK is pleased to announce the second seminar in their 2010/11 seminar
series.

The next seminar will take place on Tuesday 16 November 2010 at 12noon.

'Protecting the vulnerable:

Poverty and social exclusion in the Republic of Ireland as the economic
crisis emerged'

Chris Whelan

School of Sociology,

University College Dublin

Whilst recent debates on welfare cuts have focused on the need to
"protect the vulnerable", it is often unclear which individuals or
groups are included in this heading. In this seminar, Professor Whelan
will make use of 2008 EU Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC)
data for Ireland to clarify the distinction between income poverty and
economic vulnerability. He will compare patterns of risk for poverty
and vulnerability in relation to key socio-economic groups, and then
consider the relationship between poverty and vulnerability and the
scale and form of welfare dependence.

The seminar will take place at NICVA, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast.

The seminar is free of charge and will be followed by a light lunch at
1.00pm.

If you would like to attend please contact Shonagh Higgenbotham

s.higgenbotham at ulster.ac.uk or 02871 675513 by Friday 12 November 2010.

The full list of seminars is attached. Please feel free to forward to
anyone who may be interested.
