Professor Michael Humphrey, University of Sydney

"Human rights and reconciliation in the neo-liberal democratic state:
Argentina and South Africa"

Thursday 6 December, 1.15pm
Dalriada House, Jordanstown Campus, University of Ulster

Prof Michael Humphrey holds the Chair in Sociology at the University
of Sydney. A dominant theme in his work has been the changing
relationship of state to citizens and citizenship in the context of
globalisation. His current research is on contemporary human rights
politics and the recovery of citizenship and the caring state in
Argentina and South Africa. Its focus is on victims' movements. It
comes out of earlier work on nation states in political crisis and
large-scale violence and the processes of political transition to
democratic government. In this research he focused on the legacies of
violence looking onto the politics of victims, trauma and national
reconciliation. Another strand of current research continuing his long
interest in the sociology of Islam is on insecurity, Muslims/Islam in
the West and transnational governmentality. His work is comparative
and based on field research in different locations including
Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, South Africa, and Lebanon. Two major
publications include Islam, Multiculturalism and Transnationalism:
from the Lebanese Diaspora, I.B. Tauris,1998; and The Politics of
Atrocity & Reconciliation; From Terror to Trauma, London: Routledge,
